Design Standards for Utilities
Under the 1873 Town Belt Deed the Town Belt can be used for “purposes of public utility to the City of Wellington”. Utilities located on the Town Belt have included water reservoirs, pipelines and power cables.
The Friends support the Council’s policies that permitted utilities must only be for essential services that cannot be reasonably located elsewhere.
Ensuring acceptable standards of on-the-ground implementation is an issue. Utilities must be designed and maintained so that the Town Belt’s green open space character is not compromised. E.g. placing water reservoirs underground.
