Places to Visit
The Town Belt offers a wealth of walks, picnic spots, viewpoints, parks and places of historic interest. It is within easy walking distance of Wellington’s CBD and inner suburbs. A few of the many opportunities are outlined below (north to south). For locations, click on the map to see an enlarged version.
Tinakori Hill
Walking and mountain biking opportunities along the open ridgetop. Walking tracks through forest on the steep slopes above the city. Native forest is gradually being restored to replace the old pine plantations that are being removed. The southern end of the Northern Walkway crosses Tinakori Hill. Viewpoint: Tinakori Hill Summit
Extensive views of western suburbs, city and harbour. Walking access from Orangi Kaupapa Road or along the ridgetop from the Northern Walkway
Stellin Memorial Park
Harbour /city views, drive-on access from Orangi Kaupapa Road. A memorial plaque to WWII hero, James Stellin, was unveiled in August 2007: see more (PDF 43KB)
Wellington Botanic Garden
Established in 1869 includes formal gardens, duck pond, bush walks, playground and tearooms. More information (www.feelinggreat.co.nz)
Viewpoint: Cable Car
Harbour/city views, access from Upland Road, the Botanic Garden or Cable Car. The City to Sea Walkway, which begins close by in the Botanic Garden, follows the Town Belt south through Kelburn Park, Central Park in Brooklyn and Macalister Park before carrying on to the South Coast.
Kelburn Park
Completed in 1907/08 by filling a gully with spoil from development of the early university buildings. Includes sports facilities and the Centennial Fountain. More information (www.feelinggreat.co.nz)
Central Park
Sheltered woodland area with walking tracks, a formal garden area and playground. Renouf Tennis Centre is located adjacent, also on Town Belt land
Viewpoint: Bell Road
City/Town Belt views, access from Bell Road.
Viewpoint: Macalister Park
Inner suburbs/Town Belt views, access from City to Sea Walkway.
Municipal Golf Links
Opened in 1915, the links were so popular that they were extended in 1919. The two parts are separated by Adelaide Road and playing fields.
Mt Albert
Extensive views of south-eastern Wellington and Cook Strait, walking access along the Southern Walkway. More information (www.feelinggreat.co.nz)
Zoological Gardens
Established in 1906, the zoo is part of various world-wide animal breeding programmes for species conservation. Includes an education centre, shop and refreshment outlets. More information (www.feelinggreat.co.nz)
Mt Victoria - Matairangi
Harbour/city/Town Belt views, drive-on access via Alexandra Road. Includes Byrd Memorial, on-site interpretation and easy local ridgetop walks. The Southern Walkway follows the Town Belt along the ridge, linking Oriental Bay, Mt Victoria, the zoo and Mt Albert, before carrying on to the south coast. More information (www.feelinggreat.co.nz)
